Product tanker recycling drops 82% year-on-year to lowest on record

With a total deadweight tons (DWT) capacity of 265,000, only seven product tankers were recycled in 2023. Compared to 1.5 million DWT (27 product tankers) recycled in 2022, this represented an 82% year-over-year decrease. Additionally, it was the lowest amount of recycling since records have been kept in 1996, according to BIMCO Chief Shipping Analyst Niels Rasmussen.
