China has set ambitious goals to lead the global shift toward greener shipping, aiming to build over half of the world’s ships using environmentally friendly fuels by 2025. The recommendations issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology should have specified the number of vessels to be built. Still, they highlighted China’s commitment to creating ships powered by lower-carbon alternatives such as liquefied natural gas and methanol. This project is consistent with Beijing’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. The guidelines underscore the need for ship engine innovation, emphasizing improving the efficiency of both conventional fuel and LNG marine engines.

The discussions revolved around the proposed scheme focusing on financing, construction and rolling out of green vessel initiatives along with the development of supporting infrastructure for the same. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), along with the World Bank and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), discussed issues related to financing, construction, and rolling out of green vessel initiatives in Kochi. These initiatives are in line with the government’s policy of the maritime sector playing an instrumental role and paving the way for India to set sail towards green sustainability transportation, the statement said.

It is reported that Prime Minister Modi might be on-board the Dubai-bound, green ammonia-fuelled ship of the Australian mining giant, Fortescue, to attend the COP28 meet. Hints to that effect have been dropped by Fortescue’s Executive Chairman, Dr Andrew Forrest. “That is what he (Modi) is saying,” Forrest said when asked if the Prime Minister would be on the ship that will call on Dubai port during the upcoming COP28 climate negotiations.

Mr. R. Sreenivas senior advisor Rear Admiral of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd said that green ports would be leading the maritime sector, according to release here by Super Computing Consortium of India (SCCI). He presented the case study of ongoing efforts towards creating green ports by Hindustan Shipyard, Visakhapatnam. A key component of green ports is the use of electric tugs in ports. Gopi Kumar Bulusu, Chair at SCCI, estimated that over the next five to 10 years around 50 such tugs are needed in Visakhapatnam alone and the national demand is well above 1,000 tugs. The market for these exceeds ₹1.0 trillion over the 10 year period. He said that Green ports is a ₹50,000 crore opportunity for Andhra Pradesh in the next five years.
