A German city is converting wastewater into methanol for ships, a world-first. The Mannheim 001 project, overseen by ICODOS, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Mannheim Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, uses biogas produced at the Mannheim wastewater treatment plant to be processed, purified, and combined with electricity and hydrogen to produce methanol. The technology aims to transform the shipping industry and reduce CO2 emissions. Federal transport minister Dr Volker Wissing said the project demonstrates how economic efficiency and climate protection can coexist and can serve as a model for other locations in Germany and Europe.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Port of Rotterdam have signed a cooperation agreement to enhance their efforts on the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, which has been instrumental in promoting maritime decarbonization and digitalization since its inception in 2022. The two ports have since brought together 28 partners across the entire container shipping value chain to drive the deployment of sustainable fuels on the 15,000-kilometer shipping route and implement digital solutions for improved efficiency. The collective ambition is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of large container vessels on the corridor by 20-30% by 2030 while accelerating the adoption of global standards and solutions to facilitate efficient port calls.

Singapore and India have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to cooperate on maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation. The LOl was inked by Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Shri R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports. Shipping and Waterways ( (MOPSW) of India, and witnessed by Dri Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and Ministry of Transport Singapore, and Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports Shipping and Waterways of India. The LOl aims to foster collaboration between Singapore and India on maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation projects, with a focus on a Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor.

British Maritime Minister Mike Kane has announced a new ambition to support all vessels operating in UK waters and docking at ports to become carbon-free. The plan focuses on alternative fuels and infrastructure for charging or refueling facilities, aiming to help vessel owners, operators, and scientists achieve emission-free voyages. This is part of the UK's transition to sustainable energy sources. The UK's maritime decarbonization plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and zero by 2050, as part of the Plan for Change vision. This strategy could help the UK meet the highest environmental guidelines set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in its 2023 GHG emission reduction strategy.

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has achieved a world-first onshore supply of green hydrogen produced on a sailing ship, the Winz Maru, as part of its "Wind Hunter" project. The yacht produced green hydrogen from offshore wind and delivered it to Tokyo's central breakwater area. The hydrogen is converted to methylcyclohexane (MCH) and supplied to onshore facilities. MOL plans to produce about 100 Nm³ of hydrogen this year and supply electricity to a trailer home and other facilities. The Wind Hunter concept involves capturing strong wind gusts to propel the vessel forward, while turbines generate electricity and produce hydrogen stored in a tank. MOL plans to produce 100 Nm³ of hydrogen this year, equivalent to 200 litres of MCH, and supply electricity to a trailer home and other facilities.
