Wärtsilä has launched its carbon capture solution (CCS) for the global maritime industry, aiming to reduce vessel CO2 emissions by up to 70%. The technology, which captures emissions from ship exhaust systems, will significantly contribute to the industry's efforts to reduce GHG emissions, aiming to meet the International Maritime Organization's 2050 reduction target. The launch follows the successful installation of the world's first comprehensive solution onboard Solvang ASA's Clipper Eris, which captures emissions from all exhaust gas sources. The technology has been in operation since the Clipper Eris set sail from Singapore in February 2025, supporting Solvang ASA's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable maritime operations.

A recent benchmarking analysis on decarbonization has revealed notable progress in certain areas alongside significant room for improvement in others. The findings likely highlight specific sectors or strategies demonstrating successful emissions reductions, potentially through the adoption of renewable energy, enhanced energy efficiency, or innovative technologies. Simultaneously, the report identifies areas where decarbonization efforts are falling short of necessary targets, possibly due to policy gaps, financial constraints, or challenges in scaling up effective solutions. By evaluating progress against defined metrics and potentially comparing different entities or regions, this benchmarking exercise offers valuable insights into the current state of decarbonization.

The Getting to Zero Coalition Action Framework: Documenting actions towards decarbonizing shipping report, published by the Global Maritime Forum’s Getting to Zero Coalition—a powerful alliance of over 200 organizations across maritime, energy, infrastructure and finance—assesses and scores progress across 26 critical actions needed to deliver the International Maritime Organization’s target of full decarbonization of the shipping industry by 2050. Seventy-six major companies across the industry value chain reported progress across 26 actions. This report serves as a key accountability and benchmarking tool, enabling stakeholders to identify barriers, scale solutions, and catalyse faster progress toward a zero-emission future for global shipping.

The Port of Rotterdam has launched a €3.5m funding initiative called Carbonid, which aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainability initiatives in the port area not covered by the EU Emissions Trading System. The initiative will provide up to €700,000 each to at least five projects, including start-ups, service providers, and machinery manufacturers. The SFOC report reveals that the global LNG carrier fleet contributes to approximately 12.7 billion metric tonnes of CO2e emissions annually, more than double the US emissions of 5.96 billion tonnes in 2023 and 80% of similar emissions from China. The report also highlights that shipping companies do not account for the lifecycle emissions of the LNG cargo they transport, despite reporting their direct operational and supply chain emissions

The Mediterranean Emission Control Area officially launched today, May 1, under the MARPOL Annex of the International Maritime Organizations. Officials are hopeful that it will help to clean the Mediterranean region and contribute to the overall improvements already seen in air quality since the launch of the first ECA in the Baltic and the addition of three subsequent areas. The IMO has three additional areas slated to enter the program. The IMO highlights the importance of the region in shipping noting that the Mediterranean is home to some of the busiest maritime routes in the world. The IMO says the Mediterranean supports 20 percent of seaborne trade. It estimates more than 17 percent of cruises and 24 percent of the worldwide fleet navigate in the Mediterranean.
