Oslo-based ro/ro carrier UECC has signed a contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard for two new 4,500 CEU PCTCs powered by multi-fuel LNG engines and battery-hybrid technology. The ships are expected to be delivered in 2028, and UECC holds options for two more if it wishes to expand the orderbook. The ships will be about 25% bigger and feature fuel-saving propulsion technologies, shore power equipment, and solar panels on the top deck. UECC tracks its carbon-saving activities through a CO2 registry and can transfer the benefits of clean fuel usage to its charterers in a verifiable format. It recently booked about 8,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent savings by buying a month of 100% liquefied biomethane bunkering in the Port of Zeebrugge for all its LNG-fueled vessels.

Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has become the first Indian port to be listed on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) portal, demonstrating its commitment to green shipping. The Union ministry of ports referred to Mormugao as "India's pioneering port to implement green ship incentives" for cargo vessels. The MPA's Harit Shrey programme, launched in October 2023, was acknowledged by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH). The IAPH officially accepted Mormugao and placed the port on their global map, making it the only port in India offering green ship incentives. The Union ministry also highlighted MPA's commitment to promoting environmentally friendly practices by offering discounts on port charges to vessels using green fuel.

MAN Energy Solutions has launched a new four-stroke ammonia engine R&D project, AmmoniaMot 2, following its success in designing and testing the first two-stroke engine. The project, initiated by MAN with industry and research institute partners and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, is scheduled to run for 3½ years. It is the successor to the AmmoniaMot project, which focused on ammonia combustion in internal-combustion engines. MAN Energy Solutions sees the future application of four-stroke ammonia engines primarily in newbuild projects for non passenger carrying vessels, such as cargo or special vessels, or as an auxiliary genset for large ammonia-powered two-stroke vessels.

Decarbonising India’s ports and shipping sector is one of the major focus areas of the ministry pf Ports, Shipping and Waterways, as India seeks to merge as a strong maritime power house globally. Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), outlined the role that the institute’s National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping will play in developing a green and sustainable ports and shipping sector in the country as well as the need for establishing domestic standards or biofuel blending in marine vessels.

India's share in the global recycling industry has increased from 27% in the past to 33% in CY22 and CY23, despite global declines. The country's ship recycling industry is expected to grow to 3.8-4.2 million GT in 2025, compared to 2.3-2.6 million GT in 2024. India accounts for 33% of the global gross tonnage dismantled in 2023, second only to Bangladesh. The industry is expected to see significant growth in CY25, with recycling levels expected to rise to over 3.8 to 4.2 million GT in CY25.
