Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) presented the first approved design concept for an LNG carrier with a wind-assisted propulsion system. The plan looks to expand the installation of the rigid sail technology known as Wind Challenger from dry bulk carriers to gas carriers as part of MOL’s corporate strategy for decarbonization. MOL working with Oshima Shipyard completed the development of the rigid sail which was deployed for the first time on a newbuild dry bulk carrier in 2022. The sail is made of rigid fiber-reinforced plastic and telescope with three panels. It is placed at the bow of the vessel and has shown positive results in lowering fuel consumption. This innovative approach aims to significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions from LNG transportation. The project, which include

China Cosco, the world's largest shipowner, has agreed to work with Australian mining conglomerate Fortescue to build a new series of bulkers powered by green ammonia. The ships would be used to transport Fortescue's iron ore to China, without onboard emissions. Fortescue stated in a statement that the collaboration represents yet another significant stride toward the decarbonization of the maritime industry. "These solutions will be integral to achieving our net zero Scope 3 emission target by 2040." Fortescue has ambitious plans to eliminate its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, and it views China as an essential partner. Chinese steel mills are the primary customers for Fortescue's iron ore exports, and the Australian company wants China's support in decarbonizing its operations.

ABS has released guidance on bunkering ammonia as a fuel, marking the first such advisory for the maritime industry. The ABS Ammonia Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory focuses on the challenges involved in bunkering ammonia as a fuel, providing a better understanding of the industry's challenges and how to address them. Ammonia is considered a leading alternative fuel candidate due to its greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential. However, safe bunkering capabilities, whether by truck, ship, or land storage terminal, are critical for its adoption. ABS has been leading the development of ammonia as a marine fuel, and this advisory is the next step in this process. It covers ammonia bunkering design, operations, risk assessment and dispersion analysis, safety procedures.

The only major port in Odisha, Paradip port, has successfully completed the first ship-to-ship transfer of special grade diesel oil at its North Oil Jetty inside the harbor area in order to reduce shipping costs. The port is looking at creative ways to turn a profit and increase business. The ship-to-ship oil transfer was carried out from MV Orkim Fortitude to empty tanker MV Torm Republican, port officials said on Wednesday. It was the first ever such exercise conducted by the port. Ship to ship (STS) is a critical operation carried out in the absence of shore reception and enables transfer of cargo seamlessly crossing the difficulties. Cargoes tare typically transferred via STS methods include crude oil, liquefied gas (LPG or LNG), bulk cargo, and petroleum products.
