Cargo traffic across 12 major Indian ports increased by 6.8% to 69.08 million tonnes in June from 64.69 MT in the previous month, with ten ports showing positive growth and two experiencing a decline. Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra saw the highest growth at 15.12%, followed by Cochin Port at 15.12%, Kamarajar Port at 10.70%, Deendayal Port at 8.57%, and New Mangalore Port at 8.53%. VO Chidambaranar Port saw 7.73% and Paradip Port 7.41% growth, respectively. SMP Kolkata Port saw 6.66% growth in traffic handling, followed by Chennai Port at 6.09% and Mormugao Port at 3.75%. Mumbai Port experienced a 6.59% decline in cargo traffic, while Visakhapatnam Port saw a 0.27% year-on-year drop.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) organized a workshop on revitalizing the Indian ship building industry. The event brought together stakeholders, government ministries, departments, shipping operators, and private sector shipyards to discuss strategies for revitalizing the shipbuilding and repair ecosystem in India, aligning with the country's ambitious Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. This workshop, MoPSW aims to present specific policies based on stakeholder inputs and invite further valuable contributions to drive demand and capacity growth in these sectors’, Shri TK Ramachandran, Secretary of MoPSW. Country premier container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India's best-performing port said it logged a 10.60% growth year-on-year in container traffic at 1,688,145 TEUs in the April-June quarter of this fiscal. The port had handled 1,526,145 TEUs in the first quarter of 2023-24, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) said. This quarterly performance is a testament to JNPA's efforts to reduce logistics costs and time by providing efficiency in EXIM and ease of doing business. I must say that this quarter has been very fruitful for JNPort as we also received the cabinet's approval for the mega port project of Vadhavan, which is going to be a game changer for the Indian Maritime sector.”

Clarksons Research's global head, Steve Gordon, reported that “Investment into alternative fuels continued in first half 2024, accounting for around one third of all newbuild orders and 41% of all tonnage placed and with orders announced for vessels capable of using either LNG (109 orders, 51 excluding LNG carriers), methanol (49 orders), ammonia (15 orders), LPG (42 orders) and hydrogen (4 orders). Excluding LNG carriers, the relative share of ordering of LNG fuel capable tonnage increased relative to methanol capable tonnage in the first half compared to 2023 levels. Clarksons Research forecasts that over a fifth of all fleet capacity will be alternative fuel capable by the end of the decade (2017: 2% of fleet capacity “on the water”, 2024: 7%, 2030(f): >20%).

Seattle-based naval architecture firm Glosten has received an Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for the design of UC San Diego's new hydrogen-hybrid research vessel, the Coastal-Class Research Vessel (CCRV), which will operate by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and use hydrogen fuel cells for zero-emissions operation. Glosten and Siemens Energy completed the preliminary design for the CCRV in March 2024. As an uninspected, California Air Resource Board (CARB)- compliant, ABS-classed vessel and an alternative design under SOLAS, the CCRV faced a complex regulatory regime. The AIP confirms that the CCRV design meets ABS technical and safety standards, and supports the use of hydrogen-fuel-cell propulsion for medium-sized coastal vessels.
