In a deal announced at Nor-Shipping 2025 Hoegh Autoliners has committed to recycling up to eight ships with the national project in an agreement worth NOK1.3 billion.Norway is aiming to establish a circular value chain in the ship recycling industry by repurposing materials from recycled ships for use in the country's construction industry. The Nordic Circles project, combining Norwegian technology, labor, and industry, aims to upcycle ship materials into certified building materials, reducing emissions by up to 97%. This innovative approach is despite Norway's high labour costs and reliance on cheap labour in the shipbreaking market. The first upcycling for Hoegh is set to be completed in 2026, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions in the construction industry by 100,000 tons.

Kongsberg has developed a digital monitoring system called Kongsberg CEMS, which aims to assist ship owners, operators, and charterers in reducing carbon emissions and ensuring compliance with regulations. The system replaces outdated measuring systems that rely on fuel consumption and engine performance, measuring greenhouse gases in ship exhaust. Eirik Ågren, Kongsberg's Sales Director for Green Initiatives, stressed the significance of precise emission measurements amid European regulations and potential IMO-driven penalties. He also highlighted the need for CEMS in the midst of assessing energy-saving devices' merits, as part of the complex challenges in shipping's decarbonization journey towards 2050.

Norway's Rystad Energy reports that the availability and production of biofuels like biodiesel and bio-LNG are limited due to the maritime transportation industry's ambition of net-zero carbon emissions. The demand for these sustainable fuels is outpacing supply, with unconstrained biodiesel demand exceeding total supply. Future-facing fuels like ammonia and methanol offer long-term promise but come with high costs and infrastructure challenges, leaving shipowners hesitant and waiting for clearer market signals.

LR's Head of Energy Transition Advisory, Jack Pringle, highlighted the importance of retrofits in shipping's decarbonisation drive. Despite the International Maritime Organization's measures being adopted at the MEPC Extraordinary Session in October and not entering force until 2028, there is no time to lose in preparing for new carbon-focused strategies, including fuel choice and the adoption of energy saving devices (ESDs). Pringle highlighted the challenge faced by owners with over 60 ESDs available, and the need for a thorough analysis of the relationship between ESD capital expenditure and net fuel savings. IMO will use the GFI to draw up two trajectories, one based on minimizing capital costs while ensuring regulatory compliance, and a second one based on operational excellence.
