A Japanese partnership involving Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Namura Shipbuilding Co. is working on developing ammonia transport as a fuel for industry and the maritime sector. The designs received initial approval from ClassNK, which reviewed the basic design drawings and risk assessment. The project focuses on market potential as a transitional fuel for power plans and the maritime sector, as well as a hydrogen carrier. The design includes a large ammonia carrier with an engine using ammonia as the main fuel source, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The ship is designed to be larger than conventional vessels, enhancing marine transport efficiency.

A new white paper from DNV reveals the strong adoption of wind assist propulsion systems (WAPS) in the 2020s, resulting in annual fuel savings of 5% to 20% for certain ships. Since 2021, there has been a rapid uptake of WAPS in the global fleet, with 52 seagoing ships in operation and 97 newbuilds with WAPS in the orderbook as of January 2025. Currently, 75% of the WAPS fleet are retrofits. Rotor sails are the dominant WAPS technology for bulkers and tankers, accounting for almost 50% of the current uptake. A tenfold increase is expected by newbuilds between 2024 and 2025, with high numbers in the orderbook for 2026 and 2027. DNV suggests that "wind corridors" could emerge, operated by autonomous and unmanned ships, which could eliminate the ship's bridge, decrease wind resistance.

The European Union has announced its Clean Industrial Deal, which aims to prioritize the domestic production of renewable fuels for aviation and shipping. The deal is part of a larger initiative worth over EUR100bn ($105m) to green various industry sectors. The EU aims to secure access to these materials and reduce dependence on unreliable suppliers. The deal also includes a new mechanism under the European Hydrogen Bank to de-risk investments in shipping fuels. European shipowners have welcomed the recognition of shipping as one of the five sectors under the Clean Industrial Deal. The deal aims to build industrial capacity in Europe and bridge the price gap between conventional and clean fuels, which can be up to five times more expensive. The Clean Industrial Deal is seen as a robust blu

Global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected to surge by 60 percent by 2040 due to Asia's faster economic growth and the race to decarbonize industries. Shell, the world's largest LNG trader, predicts a 10 percentage point increase in global trade by 2040, driven by Asian economic growth, the need to decarbonize heavy industry and transport, and the emerging growth in the energy-intense tech sector. China, the world's largest LNG importer, is increasing its import capacity to provide piped gas connections for 150 million people by 2030, while India is improving its infrastructure to connect 30 million people over the next five years. It compiles the outlook by interpreting data from several energy consultants, such as Wood Mackenzie and S&P Global Commodity Insights.
