The International Maritime Organization's revision of its Carbon Intensity Indicator rules could address nearly half of shipping's climate impacts and deliver ocean health co-benefits, but the outcome is uncertain. Governments are reviewing evidence and potential solutions, with a final decision due by January 2026. The shipping industry contributes to 3% of global climate emissions, causing ocean health issues like oil spills and toxic paint. It also poses a threat to human health, causing 250,000 deaths and millions of asthma cases annually. Regulators have struggled to keep up with industry growth, leading to weak measures and worsening environmental issues. The Carbon Intensity Indicator revision offers an opportunity to address these issues.

The ship recycling process is a key contributor to a circular economy where materials and components may be reused or recycled. Shipowners should make sure that their boats comply with the regulatory controls and inspections controlling ship recycling, since the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) is scheduled to go into force this year. In its most recent advice document, "Safe and Green Recycling for Ship Owners," DNV describes how ship owners may comply with the HKC, which will take effect on June 26, 2025, as well as the current EU Ship Recycling Regulations (EU SRR). The primary focus of these regulations is to enhance the health and safety of workers while protecting the environment from pollution and the release of hazardous materials.

A report by the IMO Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping initiative (IMO CARES) highlights the significant contribution of domestic shipping to global greenhouse gas emissions. Domestic shipping accounts for 26.2% of total emissions, with 9.2% for ships exclusively operating domestically. The report analyzes domestic fleets in African and Caribbean Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries, outlining priority areas for action to support decarbonization of the sector.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has launched the Prima Verde, a green multi-purpose cargo ship, as part of its strategy to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The vessel, built at the Onomichi Dockyard in Japan, is the world's first to use green steel materials, an engine that runs exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO), and a wind-assisted vessel propulsion system. The vessel, registered in Liberia, can transport steel products, construction machinery, heavy machinery, plants, railroad vehicles, or bulk cargoes. JFE Steel Corporation supplied JGreeX, a green steel material that reduces CO2 emissions during production, for the hull. Japan Engine Corporation built a high combustion efficiency and low carbon dioxide emission engine that runs exclusively on MGO.

Norway's Port of Harstad has launched shore power for ships at its Larsneset terminal, expanding its green energy services. Plug Harstad, a joint-stock company owned by Port of Harstad and Plug Nord, invested approximately NOK 11 million in the facility. The project received NOK 2.4 million in funding from Norwegian government enterprise Enova, with the remaining investment from the owners. The facility complements the existing shore power infrastructure at Stangnes, reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
